Research is not essential to match in Family Medicine.
First and second year medical students interest in family medicine should join the Fmaily Medicine Interest group.
Research opportunities may be available in our department. Contact the pathway advisor.
No - we do not offer shadowing opportunities.
Away rotations are encourages but not essential to successfully match in Family Medicine. Several students choose to do "audition rotations" at residency programs they may be intested in.
Several fellowships are offered after Family Medicine residency. A few Geriatrics, Sports Medicine, Obstetrics, and Faculty Development. Job opportunities include, but are not limited to, private practice, academic practice, urgent care, emergency department, and hospitalist.
Family Medicine as a specialty offers the ability to tailor your schedule to achieve a desirable work-life balance.

Those entering Family Medicine need to have a broad depth of medical knowledge and the desire to enter into a lifelong relationship with their patients and their families.
The FMEC (Family Medicine Education Consortium, www.fmec.net) is a good place for students to learn about Family Medicine residency programs in the region. The AAFP (American Academy of Family Physicians, www.aafp.org). National Conference held yearly in Kansas City in July is a good place for students to learn more about Family Medicine as a specialty and also about residency programs across the country.

Specialty Description
A family physician provides continuing, comprehensive health care for the individual and family. Family Medicine is a specialty in breadth that integrates the biological, clinical and behavioral sciences. The scope of family medicine encompasses all ages, both sexes, each organ system and every disease entity. The family physician is concerned with the total health care of the individual and the family and is trained to diagnose and treat a wide variety of ailments in patients of all ages. Special emphasis is placed on the primary care of families, utilizing consultants, and community resources when appropriate.
Time Requirement
The residency training for family practice is three years. An additional year of training is required to be certified in a subspecialty.
