CLERKSHIP COMPANION
2008-2009 Handheld Computer Requirement for 3rd and 4th Year Students
treo

All 3rd and 4th year medical students at Drexel University College of Medicine are required to have a handheld computer (also known as a PDA or (Personal Digital Assistant) or a web-enabled SmartPhone to be used for patient and procedure logging in each of the clerkships. Patient logs must be maintained for all of the required third year clerkships (Family Medicine, Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Surgery) as well as for the 4th year Neurology clerkship and the Medicine Subinternship. These logs must be regularly synchronized to your notebook computer and uploaded via the web to the central database where they will be evaluated by the clerkship directors. In addition, all students are required to have ePocrates Essentials installed on their PDAs or SmartPhones, as well as other software that may be required by individual clerkships.

The Clerkship Companion logging program is available for both the Palm and the Windows Mobile operating systems. For the 2008-2009 academic year, we will also provide a version of Clerkship Companion that will run in a browser of an Internet-connected phone, such as a Blackberry or an iPhone, as well as on a Windows Mobile SmartPhone, a Treo or a Centro.

For Internet-connected devices (any phone/PDA that has a browser and for which you have a data plan): You do not have to install the Clerkship Companion program on your device, and when you log patient data, the data will be uploaded directly to the central database at the school, so you will not have to synchronize your device to your notebook computer. You can verify that your Internet-connected device is capable of running the Clerkship Companion software by navigating to the following URL on your device:
http://webcampus.drexelmed.edu/ClerkshipCompanion/ClerkshipCompanion0809.

For standalone (not Internet-connected) Palm PDAs: the minimum specification is OS3.0 through 5.x, with a minimum of 8 MB of RAM (at least 1 MB free).

For standalone (not Internet-connected) Windows Mobile PDAs: the minimum specification is 16 MB ROM and 32 MB RAM (at least 2 MB free). The software runs on Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6.0 PDAs.  Only certain Windows Mobile PDAs are able to run the Clerkship Companion software.  In general, if the smartphone has a keyboard, touchscreen and stylus and runs the full version of Microsoft Office Mobile (not just the reader), it should be OK.  To check on a particular model, please visit the Microsoft website at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/smartphone/default.mspx and narrow your selection to the following two features: "Microsoft Office Mobile" and "Touch screen with stylus".

For all standalone PDAS: You will need to synchronize your PDA to your notebook regularly (including on away rotations) to avoid loss of data which might occur if your handheld is lost or stolen. In addition, your notebook computer must able to access the Internet in order to upload your data to the common database.

On or about June 15th, we will release version 0809 of the Clerkship Companion software.  This is the only version that can be used to log patients during the 2008-2009 academic year.  Once the software is available, you will be expected to obtain your PDA and to download and install Clerkship Companion.  As part of your Intersession requirements, you are expected to upload one test patient log to the server.

If you have any questions concerning this handheld computer requirement, please contact us.
