Computer Checklist
After you have your computer, complete this list!

You've bought a new notebook, maybe you acquired a newer used notebook computer or you already had one. In either case, you must do the following items in order to have your notebook work on the Drexel campus, have it function safely, and be able to access many of the course resources.

Follow these steps in the order given. You will need to have your Drexel UserID and Password(s) for some of the steps. If you haven't done so already, please activate your computer account. See About Computer Accounts and Policies.

These instructions are for Windows notebooks. Macintosh users should perform comparable steps.

1. Set or make sure that all local login accounts for your own laptop have a password.

There is an account that is automatically set-up on your laptop with a login name called "Administrator".   THE PASSOWRD FOR THIS ACCOUNT MUST BE SET. Any laptop without a password for the "Administrator" account will risk being locked out of the Drexel network.

2A. Register your built-in or external wireless ethernet card.
First, find the Identification Number (MAC Address) of your wirless adapter/card.

Finding your MAC Address

If you have built-in wireless ethernet, then do this on your notebook:
- Under "Start", choose "Run", then "Command"
- In the Black text screen, type this.... ipconfig /all (Note the space after ipconfig)
-
Look for the number after "Physical Address"
(It will be 12 numbers and/or letters) This is the ID#

If you have an external wireless card, remove it and look for the ID # (also called "MAC address").

Second, go to Drexel's Dragonfly website at http://inside.drexel.edu/dragonfly to register. You can use one of the public computers on the ground floor at Queen Lane below the library. You will need to login to this site with your Drexel UserID and you Password. Follow the steps given at the registration site.

2B) Enable Encryption for your wireless ethernet adapter.
After successfully registering your wireless card, the dragonfly website will give you detailed instructions about setting up encryption. Follow those instructions.

3) Check that your notebook computer is 'wirelessly' on-line.
Start Internet Explorer and go to http://webcampus.drexelmed.edu
This address is the DrexelMed Curriculum page for students. You will use this page to find many resources throughout your years at Drexel. Now would be a good time to bookmark this page so you can find it later.

4) Do the Windows Updates!!!
Windows regularly releases updates or "patches" which make the operating system better and also fix potential security flaws. Because your notebook will be connected to the public internet while on campus, you MUST do the windows updates regularly. IRT recommends you perform a Windows Update daily. Just because you have a new computer doesn't mean Windows is up-to-date. The operating system may have been installed up to a year ago and many new updates may be needed.

Here is how to perform a Windows Update:
a) In Internet Explorer, choose "Tools" from the menu at the top, then "Windows Update"
b) At the Microsoft website you may be asked to allow the installation of the scan engine software. Please allow this to install.

c) Click the "Scan for updates" link
d) When completed (100%) look in the left hand column at Critical Updates. If there are any, then select "Perform All Critical Updates" You may have to reboot, and then go back to "Step A" to re-check the Windows Updates again to make sure they have all installed.

5A) Download & Install Syamantec Anti-virus Corporate Edition
It is extremely important to have anti-virus software on your computer and keep it up-to-date by configuring it to automatically check for new anti-virus files online. You may have received this software (or a free trial) with your computer. Drexel also offers Symantec/Norton Ant-virus software for free download.

NOTE: You can only have 1 anti-virus software type running on your PC. If you want to download and install Symantec/Norton from Drexel, you MUST uninstall any other anti-virus software before installing Drexel's

To download Syamtec (and to see what other software is available) go to Drexel IRT's software page, at http://www.drexel.edu/irt/services/comp_mark/software.html

Follow the instructions under "DOWNLOAD IT" to log in.
When you get to the software page, open the the "Students" folder, then the appropriate folder for your laptop. Click on "SymantecAV_10" and then download both of these files to your desktop:
  - SAV.exe
  - Patch_for_V10_2

Double-click the files you just downloaded to start the installation process.

5B) Do the Live Update for Symantec Anti-virus Corporate Edition regularly
After installing it, open it up by double-clicking on the yellow shield icon in your taskbar (bottom right of your screen). Symantec will open and you will see a "Live Update" button, click this and follow the instructions. You should do this Live Update at least once per week or set it to perform automatically.

6A) Downlaod Microsoft Office 2003 (or purchase the CD for a small handling fee)
Do not download this software over a modem connection. You can wait until your are on campus and connected to the fast LAN.

To download Microsoft Office 2004 (and to see what other software is available) go to Drexel IRT's software page, at http://www.drexel.edu/irt/services/comp_mark/software.html

Follow the instructions under "DOWNLOAD IT" to log in.
When you get to the software page, open the the "Students" folder, then the appropriate folder for your laptop. Click on "MicrosoftOffice2003" then download both of these files to your desktop:
  - Office2k3.exe
(NOTE: This is a large download and may take 15 mins even with a fast connection.)
  - Office2003_SP2
(NOTE: This is a large download and may take 15 mins even with a fast connection.)

Alternately, you can purchase Office 2003 Professional for Students on CD for less than $15. Go to http://www.drexel.edu/irt/services/comp_mark/software.html and click on "BUY IT"

6B) Install Microsoft Office 2003
Double-click the files you just downloaded to start the installation process. Start with the file "Office2k3.exe" and follow all on screen instructions. Make sure you install at least Word, Powerpoint and Excel. Others programs on the CD-ROM are Frontpage, Publisher, Accss and Outlook.

When this has finished, double-click the other file you downloaded named "Office2003_SP2.exe" and follow on scren instructions.

6C) Do Microsoft Office Updates
After you installed Microsoft Office, you may have accepted it's offer to perform the Office Updates. Just like the Windows Updates, the Office Updates provide a quick way to get any enhancements to the Office software which you installed.
- TO DO THIS, go to the same Windows Update screen in Step 8A. Look for the link that says "Office Update" in the top horizontal menu on that page. Click on it and follow the steps.

7) Make sure you have Windows Media Player 10 or higher installed
If you want to watch the streaming videos of the IFM lectures or PIL resource sessions, you will need to use Windows Media Player.

-Start Windows Media Player. if you can't find it, look under "Start"..."Programs" or look under "Start"..."Programs"..."Accessories"..."Entertainment"
- When Media Player starts up, click on "Help"..."About
Windows Media Player".
The current version you have will be listed here.

Version 10 is the latest and if you have anything lower, you must download and install the new version from www.microsoft.com/mediaplayer

8) Install QuickTime Player
QuickTime is needed for DxR Clinician, a web based clinical simulation program.
You can download the latest version of the free player from www.apple.com/quicktime
