Drexel University College of Medicine (DUCOM) launched an innovative program for physicians wishing to return to active clinical practice, change their subspecialty, or prepare for admission to US graduate medical education training programs.This program may help meet the current physician shortage needs.

Drexel Medicine® Physician Refresher/Re-Entry Course optimizes DUCOM's excellence in medical education and Instructional technology resources. The program modules may be taken in sequence or independently:

  1. Structured on-site six-week Preceptorship in clinical venues - observer will participate in medical rounds, core conferences, discussions with director and preceptor, presentations, web-based and standardized patient exercises to learn about integrative up-to-date high quality medical care in the United States.   The program was launched in November 2006. 

  2. Medical Update Curriculum and Assessment - a distance-learning didactic curriculum that provides up to date general medical information with a pre and post-test assessment format.   We launched this program in October 2007.

  3. Online Clinical Skills Curriculum and Assessment - a distance-learning, interactive, clinical skills program that includes individualized assessment and enhancement of skills in communication, history taking, physical exams, clinical reasoning and patient management.   This site is under construction.

  4. Targeted Remediation and Training

              Medical Documentation - designed to enhance medical documentation and coding
                                                      skills with follow-up evaluations. 

In addition to a high caliber clinical experience, these innovative curricular strategies allow physicians around the world access to resources designed to enhance their professional and clinical skills. During the six week preceptorship, participants will build a portfolio of accomplishments which would include activities completed during the preceptorship, a certificate of completion, a transcript and assessment outcomes.

Target Audience

  1. Physicians who wish to return to active clinical medicine after an extended leave.
  2. Physicians who wish to change their specialty focus and need a primary medical update.
  3. International medical graduates who wish to be accepted into US graduate medical education training programs.
  4. Physicians who wish to enhance their clinical skills.
