Additionally, the Office of Student Affairs maintains a "Career Advising Website" located at:
http://webcampus.med.drexel.edu/osa/careeradvising/
. On this site you can find useful information from 4th year students, sample CV's and personal statements, as well as links to
Careers in Medicine:
http://www.aamc.org/students/cim/ (which is
another useful website), FREIDA, ERAS, NRMP, and much more. THE ELECTRONIC RESIDENCY APPLICATION SERVICE (ERAS) WILL OPEN FOR STUDENTS TO INPUT THEIR INFORMATION ON JULY 1, 2008.
REGISTRATION FOR THE 2008 MAIN MATCH WILL BEGIN AUGUST 15th 2008.
REGISTRATION WILL BE DONE ON THE WEB. STUDENTS WILL REGISTER FOR THE NRMP
ON-LINE. INSTRUCTIONS WILL BE SENT TO YOU VIA EMAIL. Check to see what your applications require. If you are applying through ERAS you will NOT need to do a professional type C.V. The ERAS system creates one for you from the information you input into your Common Application. You may need to provide faculty letter writers with a C.V. The ERAS C.V. format may be limiting for some due to the format of the ERAS common application. Some seniors have still chosen to do their own C.V. Also, some programs may still request a C.V. Pathway Directors/Advisors, Dr. Parrish or Marie Hartman would be happy to review your C.V. + Personal Statement.
Most programs ask for 3 letters of recommendations, including a chairman's or Department's letter (in the specialty to which you are applying). I would strongly recommend requesting 4-5 letters in the event one of your letter writers does not get your letter in on time, you won't be stuck or miss completed application deadline. We advise meeting with each letter writer to discuss your career plans, personal interests, etc.- it will help him/her compose a more personal letter. All Dean's Letter
requests must be in by Oct 1, to guarantee Nov 1 mailing date. ALL Students
must submit one request form for a Dean's Letter for ERAS. Transcript
requests are process through the Registrar's Office 215-991-8206. Sept. 15- Oct 1, 2008 is the recommended target dates to have applications out and letter of recommendations sent by. The sooner your applications are in and transmitted to your programs the more flexibility you will have in getting and setting up interviews. This is true for all programs not just ERAS programs. Also due to the increased number of specialties participating through ERAS, the electronic transmission may require more time. Do not delay in completing your ERAS application. Pathway Directors, faculty, Careers in Medicine(CIM): http://www.aamc.org/students/cim/start.htm . Take the Specialty Indecision Scale to get some personalized tips and suggestions to help guide you through choosing a specialty. FREIDA, as well as contacting recent graduates for feedback and perhaps a place to stay while in town. When scheduling interviews, remember to be courteous to the person on the other end, you never know who answers the phone! Setting up interviews economically and conveniently takes some strategy and good planning.
TAKE NOTES!!!! Consider using the "Residency Program Information Form." Careers in Medicine also has a "Residency Program Evaluation Guide/Form. Allow time between interviews to REST. THANK YOU LETTERS…EXCELLENT IDEA - You may also want to include any new information about yourself that wasn't in your application i.e., honors, awards, etc. Keep them up-to-date on senior year. FOLLOW UP WITH PROGRAMS!
