Goals and Objectives

The goals of the psychiatry pathway are as follows:

  1. To provide a student with greater familiarity with the field of psychiatry and thereby assist the student in making an appropriate career choice;
  2. to enhance the possibility of initiating or further developing mentoring relationships within the department; and
  3. to encourage a thorough foundation in non-psychiatric disciplines.

Courses provided by the Department have also been designed to provide those students who are not planning to go into psychiatry with the option of obtaining some additional training in psychiatry during medical school. The objectives for individual fourth-year elective courses are provided in a separate document.

Description of Pathway

Click here for a summary table of the Psychiatry Pathway.

The Department of Psychiatry requires pathway students to select two but no more than three psychiatry courses during the senior year.  One course must be done at a home site.  The selection of senior courses away from the DUCOM clinical affiliates will be limited to three, as per school policy.

Students who are considering a career in psychiatry are encouraged to get additional training in other disciplines, especially family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics, pediatrics, and general surgery. Electives in highly subspecialized aspects of medicine and surgery are not recommended.

Psychiatry Courses

Current Primary Courses may be found in the Senior Electives Catalogue under "Psychiatry." For a current listing, please refer to the on-line catalogue at: /clinicaleducation/SeniorElectives/

Textbooks and Learning Resources

Students will be given a list of recommended references and related readings at the time of developing their pathway selection.

Evaluation

Evaluation of Student Performance:

The student's clinical performance will be evaluated by the supervising attending and may include consultation with collaborating residents and other clinical personnel who are familiar with the student's handling of responsibilities. The Department recommends to both attendings and students that they jointly review a draft of the written evaluation during the latter part of the fourth week in the course before the final copy of the Senior Student Clinical Rotation Evaluation Report is/are completed. The completed evaluation forms should be signed by the attending or resident and forwarded to the Office of Medical Student Education as follows:

Dr. Ramchandani or Ms. Szylobryt
Department of Psychiatry
Friends Hospital 2nd floor Scattergood Bldg. rm E229

The contents of the Evaluation Report will be summarized by the Department's Office of Medical Student Education and forwarded to the Registrar.

Any student who fails to receive a grade of Satisfactory or better will be required to undertake remediation as worked out by the Department in collaboration with the Promotions Committee and the Dean's office. Appeals regarding unsatisfactory performance should be initiated by a letter from the concerned student to the Chair of the Department.

Evaluation of the Elective

At the end of each elective, students will be required to complete a departmental form in order to provide a written critique of each elective. The completed form should be forwarded to Dr. Ramchandani or Ms. Szylobryt. In March of the senior year, each pathway student will be asked to complete a brief evaluation form summarizing the utility of the overall pathway.
