Pediatrics Pathway

Return to top of page

Introduction

The Department of Pediatrics will offer a discipline-based pathway for members of the senior class. The pathway is designed for students who are considering residency training and/or a career in Pediatrics. Students who desire to learn more about Pediatrics are encouraged to elect rotations in general Pediatrics or in Pediatric Subspecialties. Students who are planning to enter a residency in Pediatrics are encouraged to use this pathway to broaden and enrich their medical experiences. Specifically, students are discouraged from taking all electives in Pediatric disciplines; there will be more than enough opportunity during residency to learn Pediatrics. Each student electing this pathway will be offered a list of names of advisors; all are members of the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics.

Goals and Objectives

The objectives of this pathway are as follows:

Description of Pathway

Click here for summary table of Pediatrics Pathway

Electives should be chosen based on the student's interests and on the student's perception of his or her weaknesses. This is the time to round out your education. If the student is interested in research, this should be taken in place of one or two electives. Electives should be taken at a home site. In addition, away electives which will broaden the student's horizon or which cover areas not available in the DUCOM affiliate system should be considered.

It is strongly recommended that students discuss their proposed schedules with a faculty advisor. This will help to ensure that the year is balanced and educational.

Evaluation

Evaluation of the Pathway
Students will be encouraged to send a one paragraph critique of each fourth-year rotation, electives and required courses, to Dr. Foster, Pathway Director, Department of Pediatrics, St. Christopher's Hospital for Children. These critiques will be shared with the pediatric faculty and will help us to advise future students more effectively. The student will be asked in the middle and at the end of the year whether an advisor was used, how often, and how useful that faculty member was. An evaluation form for the pathway and all rotations will be distributed to each student.

Evaluation of the Student
Evaluation of the student will be done by the faculty of each rotation. The standard DUCOM evaluation forms will be used.
