Neurology Pathway

Drexel University College of Medicine

Introduction

The Department of Neurology offers to the senior medical student a discipline-based pathway. It is designed to attract students who are interested in becoming Neurologists or those individuals who have selected other disciplines (within or outside the neuroscience area), who desire a broad exposure to the various neuroscience specialties and related disciplines.

Goals and Objectives

The goals of the pathway include:

  1. To promote student development of clinical skills and acquisition of knowledge in the field of Clinical Neurology and in related fields.
  2. To expose the student to the various disciplines within the neurosciences.
  3. To allow the student to concentrate both his/her energies in the neurosciences, but also to create a senior year curriculum that offers a wide spectrum of educational opportunity.

Senior Student Discipline-Based Pathway Curriculum in Neurology

Students selecting the discipline-based pathway in Neurology are required to take the following courses as part of the fourth-year curriculum. Each student may select or be assigned a faculty advisor who will assist the student in organizing the senior year pathway and who will provide close supervision and guidance throughout the year. These three rotations are to be taken at institutions within the DUCOM system, so designated "home" sites.

Required courses (must take all three):

  1. Rotation in Internal Medicine (subinternship)
  2. Neurology Course (pre-requisite for Sub I)
  3. Neurology Sub-internship
  4. Neurological Electives: Take at least one but not more than two months, in any combination. Away rotations at institutions not listed below need to be approved in advance by the Pathway Director.
    • Ambulatory Neurology – 2 or 4 week course includes the office management of general neurologic problems. In addition, the student will have weekly exposure to the treatment and overall care of patients with epilepsy, dementing illnesses, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), peripheral neuropathy, muscle disease and complicated pain syndromes.
    • Clinical Neuroscience Electives - The Clinical Neuroscience Electives expose the pathway student to neurologic subspecialties. The courses offered at Hahnemann include Neuromuscular Diseases and Epilepsy. Child Neurology is offered at St. Christopher’s. All are offered for 2 or 4 weeks. You may seek similar electives at other locations.
    • Research Elective: Electives such as Dementia with Dr. Lippa for two contiguous months or 1-2 months with Drs. Jenssen and Pillai in Epilepsy are available at HUH. You may seek out other research electives.
  5. Neuro-related Elective(s): Choose at least one month from this list:
The general electives offer the student experiences outside Neurology, but in disciplines with relevance to neurologic diseases. These electives can be taken "home" or "away."
    a. Orthopedics
    b. Rheumatology
    c. Ophthalmology
    d. Otolaryngology
    e. Emergency Medicine
    f. Cardiology
    g. Anesthesiology
    h. Neuroradiology
    i. Neurosurgery
    j. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
    k. Neuro-ophthalmology
  6. Free Electives
    • There are two free elective periods in the senior year. Proposals of a "non-traditional" free elective are welcome and students are encouraged to select clinical and/or research experience at institutions outside the DUCOM system. Strict adherence to educational value is necessary, however.

NOTES:
The student may take a maximum of 16 weeks of Neurological course work in the senior year. This includes the eight weeks of the Clerkship and the Subinternship.
