Overview
The facilities of the University are available to all students of the University. A student ID is required to access all buildings on the campuses. Students must comply with all rules and regulations governing the use of University facilities. Automated card readers are "keyed" to ID cards prepared and distributed at the Queen Lane or the Center City sites. Students wishing to access facilities for which their ID cards are not "keyed" must use main building entrances and present their ID cards to the security officers on duty there. Some internal facilities require keyed ID cards for entry, e.g., the Fitness Center at the Center City Campus, the PIL Resource rooms. The Security officers at the Queen Lane Campus and Center City Hahnemann Campus know that all students in the University may use its facilities. Should student encounter any difficulty, they should contact the Office of Student Affairs to apprise us of the difficulty. Enjoy the facilities. Respect and maintain them. Use them safely and wisely.

Reporting of Incidents at the Queen Lane
Campus
All serious incidents of crime should be reported to the City of Philadelphia's Police Department. This is accomplished by the victim call 9-911 from on campus and 911 from off campus. Additionally, the Philadelphia Police Department provides Drexel's Public Safety Department with a report of incidents that have been reported to them for the neighborhoods surrounding the campus. Known and reported crimes are annotated on the Daily Security Log that is maintained in the Security Liaison Office at this campus.
In addition, when circumstances warrant, the University will employ e-mail, voice mail, web site, and Public Safety Alerts to provide timely notice of criminal activities on and around campus. Should incidents occur that are beyond the capability of the University's Public Safety Department, Philadelphia Police will respond and assist in the proper handling of the incident.
All incidents should also be reported promptly to Drexel's Public Safety Officer located at the Security Desk in the main entrance lobby at the Queen Lane campus. Investigations are conducted as appropriate and a file is created. If warranted, local police are contacted for assistance. Any student or employee who observes an incident such as theft, substance abuse, assault or suspicious behavior should report the activity to the Security Desk by dialing 8101from a campus phone or 215-991-8101. The Security Desk is staffed 24 hours a day. Public Safety Officers and vehicles are equipped with two-way radios to ensure timely deployment of personnel. Callers should be prepared to provide as much information about the incident as possible (e.g., specific location, type of incident, description of those involved, etc.).
As required in the College and University Security Act of 1988 and the Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act of 1990, the University reports annually to its students and employees the incidence of crime on campus, the University's security procedures, policies and the necessary steps to enhance our public safety.
If you believe there has been a violation of one or more of the provisions of the Pennsylvania College and University Security Information Act, you may file a complaint at the Department of Public Safety. The complaint will be forwarded to the Executive Director of Public Safety, who will respond. If, after receiving a reply to the complaint, you still feel that the violation has been committed, you may appeal to the Senior Vice President for Student Life and Administrative Services, who has the ultimate responsibility to receive and resolve such complaints.

Drexel University College Of Medicine: Your Right-to-Know
Queen Lane Medical Campus
Drexel University, in compliance with the College and University Security
Act of 1988 (PA) and the federal Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security
Act of 1990 (Clery Act), revised in 1999, provides the following information
and statistics on the frequency of crime, known and reported, on and off campus,
as well as crime prevention policies, procedures and educational programs
that the University has in place to ensure the safety and security of its
community.
The department's management team consists of an Executive Director of Public
Safety and Department Head, a Director of Public Safety, an Assistant Director
of Public Safety, an Assistant Director of Investigative Services, a Security
Liaison Officer, and a Manager of Contracted Services.
The Executive Director, Director and Security Liaison Officer are responsible
for managing all campus-related security issues, and safety programs. The
Department of Public Safety is responsible for investigations, complaints
and incidents that occur on campus property, reviewing incident reports and
contacting students, faculty and staff regarding incidents that may need additional
follow up.
When appropriate, the Department of Public Safety also works with city, state
and federal law enforcement agencies, such as the State Police, FBI or Drug
Enforcement Agency. Members of the Department of Public Safety are not commissioned
law enforcement officers and do not possess authority to arrest individuals.
Security Officers
The uniformed arm of the Department of Public Safety services the medical
community 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Security Officers follow and
enforce the policies and procedures set by the University, as well as appropriate
local, state and federal laws.
Background investigations are conducted on all officers and include pre-employment
and criminal history checks, Department of Motor Vehicle operator license
validation, pre-employment drug screening, education level verification and
previous employment history checks.
All officers receive an orientation to buildings and campus grounds, as well
as specific on the job training for the first 30 days. All security officers
receive ongoing in-service training to update and enhance their professional
skills.
Drexel University recognizes the importance of maintaining a safe and secure
environment for study and work. Security personnel work to maintain a safe
environment for visitors, students and employees, and to plan and implement
actions necessary to prevent loss or damage to personal belongings, campus
facilities and properties. Mobile and foot patrols, closed-circuit television,
electronic alarms and other surveillance measures are used to monitor security
conditions. Any identified deviation or deficiency is corrected promptly.
When a serious criminal incident occurs or when security personnel detain
a person, the Philadelphia Police Department is notified. Security personnel
are not permitted to carry any weapons in the performance of their duties.
The possession or use of firearms, other weapons, or explosives by employees,
students, or visitors on campus is prohibited.
Fitness Centers
Queen Lane Campus
The Fitness Center is located adjacent to the student lounge. Students must present valid active ID cards for access. The Fitness Center is open 24 hours daily. The facility is only available to University students. Rules for the fitness center are posted in the center.
At Orientation, all entering medical students are informed of procedures for reporting crimes that occur on campus or in the neighborhood by Security personnel.
The doors at Queen Lane are card-keyed for entry with active, valid student identification cards. For safety, on weekends and holidays, and from 7 PM to 6 AM on weekdays, all of the key card entrances are deactivated except the main entrance of each building. Also, on those days and during the evening hours, students and staff leave their ID cards at the security desk by the main entrance, and pick them up when leaving. This will enable Security to know who is in the building in case of fire or an emergency.
In order to try to assure personal safety on all campuses, please consider the following advice:
· Do not walk between your home or between Henry Avenue and the College of Medicine Campus alone, especially after dark.
· Walk confidently and assertively. Survey your surroundings and walk at a normal, brisk pace.
· Use the "buddy system" when walking. Walking in groups substantially reduces your risk of attack.
· When carrying a purse, keep it close to your body with the clasp facing you. Carry your shoulder bag over one shoulder across the body. Never dangle your purse from your forearm or fingertips.
· Use shuttles when traveling among the East Falls sites.
· In case of emergency at times when the shuttles do not run, students may request assistance from the College of Medicine Campus Security Desk, (215) 991-8102.
· Strongly consider paying to park in the College of Medicine Campus lot. Take valuables out of your car and/or lock them in your trunk. Always lock your vehicle and make sure the windows are closed securely.
· Walk toward your car with keys in hand and look inside the car, especially the back seat.
· Use security escorts. Students who would like escorts to a vehicle at a distant site on the College of Medicine Campus lot or just outside the gates may ask for escort.
· Secure valuables. While at the hospital, keep belongings in a locked locker and avoid leaving money in lab coat pockets.
· Do not carry jewelry or large sums of money.
· Never “flash” your money. Keep some money in one wallet and the remainder in another compartment of your purse or pocket.
· If attacked or accosted, do not fight for your property. Immediately after the attacker is gone, call out for help or blow a whistle -- anything to attract attention. Later, try to give police and Security as much information as possible.
· In the event a crime is committed off campus, dial 911 for police assistance and report the incident. Medical students should also report the incident to the College of Medicine Campus Security Desk, (215) 991-8102.
The security guidelines for the College of Medicine Queen Lane Campus and East Falls sites that are distributed at Orientation are available through Marie Hartman, Director of Student Services, at (215) 991-8219.
In compliance with the amended Student Right-to-Know and Campus Security Act, a report of criminal activities on the College of Medicine Campus and East Falls sites can be obtained by written request to the Director, Office of Security, 3300 Henry Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19129.
