"As time went on, I found that the kids started to ask me more and more questions, some completely unrelated to their math homework.  They seemed to be quite interested in getting to know all of us.  I tried to share a bit about myself and my life and the kids opened up in turn.  ...I feel like I may have helped these kids just by actively listening to them and by showing them each respect."

Work-to-Ride Tutoring/Mentoring

Description of Program:

Founded in 1994, Work to Ride (WTR) is a non-profit community-based intervention program which utilizes horses and horse sports in unique and innovative ways as a means to engage urban youth in wholesome, constructive activities. WTR provides youngsters with a positive outlet for their energy and an alternative to negative "street" activities. Through active participation in WTR programs, young people acquire a variety of life skills. WTR functions as an intervention program, working in conjunction with Philadelphia schools, private and non-profit social service agencies and locally based community action organizations.  In order to remain in the WTR program, the youth must maintain a high grade-point average.  Drexel Medical Students serve as tutors/mentors to the Work-to-Riders throughout the school-year.
