Health Start

Description of Program:

Mercy Vocational High School, located only minutes from the DUCoM campus, is the only Catholic vocational high school in the United States.  Medical students serve as one-to-one mentors for 11th-graders from Mercy who are working towards becoming Certified Nursing Assistants.  Medical students will also lead group workshops on anatomy, physiological systems, and higher education. The Health Start Program meets alternately at the DUCOM campus and Mercy Vocational, for seven sessions in the fall. 

Learning Objectives and Goals:

The goals of the Health Start program are to:

    • Improve teaching skills
    • Help CNAs-in-training to understand physiological systems in preparation for the certification exam
    • Learn the role of a Certified Nursing Assistant on the medical team
    • Build relationships between medical students from a range of backgrounds and children of low-income families
    • Improve communication skills
