he tradition of Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University flourishes around the College of Medicine campus. Each year hundreds of students take part in events that attest to their commitment to career and community, as well as comaraderie. These events also serve as a unifying force between students and faculty, as many professors and doctors can often be found contributing to the success of campus-wide events. As we look to the future, the College of Medicine sees these events growing in strength and number.

Orientation
First year medical students are greeted on their first day of a week long orientation by administration, faculty and members of the second year class. The Office of Student Affairs works closely with the second year class to ensure the first few days on campus are informative as well as enjoyable. Orientation week includes both fun and serious activities, as the students begin to get to know one another. Orientation activities include a student organization fair, scavenger hunt, an annual pool party and BBQ at the Philadelphia Cricket Club hosted by the Alumni Association and other social events planned each evening by members of the second year class.

Welcome Back Party
New friends and old faces are abundant at the annual Welcome Back Party. The celebration takes place on Boat House Row where students and faculty alike enjoy the chance to relax and share stories before the start of the academic year. In such a stress-free atmosphere there is no better way to welcome new and returning students.

White Coat Ceremony
The honor, power, and prestige of the doctor’s whitecoat bestowed upon the first year medical student is truly an experience that initiates newly oriented students into a community of caring healers. It serves to remind them of why they are making a lifelong commitment to this sacred profession. Established in 1993 by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, the White Coat Ceremony was designed to encourage a renewed focus on compassion among future generations of physicians.

Annual College of Medicine Halloween Party
Ghosts, goblins, and ghouls won’t be found at this party, for the creativity of medical students simply doesn’t allow for it. Rather students craft some of the newest costumes, even using their wit to resurrect the archenemy of all anatomy students… Dr. Netter’s “Dermatome Man.” Taking place at Fairmount Park’s Memorial Hall, the Halloween Party has become one of the most popular events for the imaginative medical student.

Volunteer Community Outreach Projects
Students and faculty are involved in many volunteer community outreach projects. Three clinics provide basic medical care to “homeless” populations. The Chinatown Healthcare Outreach Projects provides healthcare services to a large Asian population. Other projects address the needs of children and youth, women, sexual minorities, addictive disorders, immigrant populations, victims of abuse, elderly populations, etc. Bridging the Gaps is a seven week community based summer internship program for university students. Programs are coordinated by the Office of Community Outreach Projects and the staff is always interested and available to discuss projects of interest to individual students. Visit our website.
Annual College of Medicine Winter Formal
Put away the books and get out of the scrubs… the Winter Formal is a time for friends, fashion, and fun. Celebrated with a different theme each year, the Winter Formal has taken the form of an “Ice Storm Ball” and Masquerade Party in years past. Last year, with the theme “Wish Upon A Star,” some lucky students had their dreams come true.

Pediatric AIDS Benefit Concert
Arias were sung, guitars were strummed and flutes were flouted by talented physicians and medical students at the Ninth Annual Pediatrics AIDS Benefit Concert. Held just above the Mutter Museum at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and organized by medical students, this event has raised over $160,000 for the Family HIV Clinic at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.
  Golden Apple/Stethoscope Awards Ceremony
Organized by students, this ceremony honors those teachers and clinicians who display a love of teaching that radiates in their actions. They are the enthusiastic, energetic examples of excellence who, through their desire, go above and beyond their responsibilities in reaching out to students. For their devotion they are cherished; for their distinction they are honored.

Match Day
A day of significant importance and magnitude; a time when senior medical students throughout the country find out where they will do their residency training. As described by one student: “Overwhelming excitement filled the room despite the fear that lay locked away inside us all. On March 21, 2002, as the clock struck 12:00pm, four years of knowledge gained and struggles defeated culminated into 250 new beginnings. Hearts leaped for joy, tears filled our eyes, and our minds, in one moment’s time, looked forward into new direction.” – Allison J. Moosally, MCP Hahnemann, Class of 2002.
