Technical Standards for Admission, Academic Progression and Graduation

The goal of the Drexel University College of Medicine is to prepare our medical graduates to be competent, caring physicians who have the skills of lifelong learning necessary to incorporate new knowledge and methods into their practice as either a generalist or specialist and to adapt to a changing professional environment. The faculty has determined that certain technical standards are prerequisite for admission, progression, and graduation from Drexel University College of Medicine.

Thus an individual must be able to independently, with or without reasonable accommodation, meet the following technical standards:

  1. Make accurate visual observations and interpret them in the context of laboratory studies or patient care.
  2. Hear and communicate effectively in oral and written English with patients and members of the health care team.
  3. Have appropriate fine-motor skills to perform a complete physical examination, do basic laboratory tests, carry out diagnostic procedures, and provide general care or emergency treatment.
  4. Be able to measure, calculate, analyze, and synthesize information needed for effective and timely problem solving. In addition, must be able to comprehend the spatial relationships of anatomic structures.
  5. Possess emotional health needed to develop and maintain a professional and therapeutic relationship with patients and those who care for them, and cope effectively with the demands and obligations associated with medical education and patient care.
  6. Be able to accomplish each of the Exit Objectives listed in the Student Handbook before graduation.

In accordance with law and Drexel University College of Medicine policy, no qualified individual with a disability shall, on the basis of that disability, be excluded from participation in College of Medicine programs or activities. The College of Medicine will provide reasonable accommodation to a qualified individual with a disability. To obtain accommodations, individuals must request them from the Office of Student Disability Services. If you have questions, the Office of Student Disability can be contacted at the following address:
