Grades and Evaluations in Medical Professionalism Peer feedback – the ability to give and receive meaningful feedback -- is an essential component of professional formation. Periodic, formal peer feedback takes place during the first two years. Faculty feedback – evaluations of professional behaviors are provided by small group faculty leaders in the preclinical years, and are part of clinical evaluations in years 3 and 4. In addition, at any time a faculty member may submit a Commendation for Exemplary Professionalism, a Letter of Concern for Professionalism or a Citation for Unprofessional Behavior. Professionalism Grade – Each student receives a Professionalism Grade of Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory at the end of each of the four years. Students who demonstrate the ability to meet the Behavioral Objectives will receive a Satisfactory for their Professionalism Grade. In years 1 and 2, any student receiving two Professionalism Evaluation (PE) forms within one academic year, which cite inappropriate behavior, will receive a Professionalism grade of Marginally Unsatisfactory. Receipt of three or more PE forms will result in a grade of Unsatisfactory. In each case, the student will be discussed at the Promotions Committee. Additional information is available in the Student Handbook. During years three and four, students receive evaluations of professional behavior and performance as part of each clerkship evaluation. These evaluations will be reflected in the Medical School Performance Evaluation ("Dean's Letter"). Students demonstrating a lack of professional behavior will be provided with opportunities for additional education or remediation.
