Dissection of cadavers has defined the special tasks and privileges of medical students.  This course places dissection in its historical, cultural, literary, spiritual, and artistic context.

In this course we will experience illness narratives
in literature, film and art, using them to further
our understanding of sickness and suffering and its deeply
personal nature. We will also develop a deeper sense of the
whole story when only a fragment of the narrative is
available.

From a variety of points of view – medical, psychological, social, ethical, spiritual and cultural – loss, dying, death and bereavement will be studied and discussed to give students the opportunity to clarify their views on their own mortality and gain understanding about caring for the dying patient.

This course examines legal and ethical issues for physicians, patients, family members, and health care professionals. General legal concepts will be analyzed, with special attention to informed consent, physician autonomy, and religious controversies and health law. 

History of Medicine

This course selectively explores historical sources of Western medical thought and practice, as well as the structure of the profession, from Hippocrates to the 21st century.  Topics include women in medicine, the history of MCP (formerly Woman's Medical College), homeopathy, and the founding of Hahnemann Medical College. Classes will utilize slides, discussion, videos, a “readers’ theatre” performance, and lecture. .

Ethics, Human Rights & Global Health

This course will examine issues of global health from perspectives within the humanities, including ethics, history, literature, law, culture and politics.  A second ten-hour elective course will follow this course in the School of Public Health and examine further issues in Global Health.  Both courses are available to all Drexel students.
