About the Institution

Saint Peter’s University Hospital (SPUH) is a 478 bed teaching hospital located in Central New Jersey. From it’s simple beginnings in 1907, SPUH has grown to become a technologically-advanced teaching hospital that provides a broad array of services to the community – from sophisticated care of premature babies to specialized geriatric medicine.

SPUH is New Jersey’s first state-designated Regional Perinatal Center (Level III) and NICU (Level III) which was established in 1981. Approximately 6,800 newborns are delivered annually, more than any other facility in New Jersey. Approximately 1,700 newborns are admitted to the 54 bassinet NICU, one of the largest on the East Coast.

In 2004, SPUH affiliated with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Together, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Cardiac Center at Saint Peter’s University Hospital was established. The Center specializes in monitoring and treating cardiac abnormalities in infants and children.

SPUH is an international training center for minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and hundreds of MIS procedures are performed here every year. The Clinical Competency Center (CCC) at SPUH was developed to promote, teach and evaluate clinical competence at every level of training, from medical student to house staff to practicing physician. The Objective Structured Clinical Examination/Exercise (OSCEE) is the CCC’s main tool to teach and evaluate clinical skills. The important part of the OSCEE at SPUH is that each station has instant feedback by the faculty, making it a powerful teaching tool.

Saint Peter’s University Hospital sponsors residency programs in Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics and Internal Medicine.
