St Christopher's Hospital for Children's Home Page
Welcome to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, a nonsectarian children's hospital established in 1875 to provide health care to the children of North Philadelphia. St. Christopher's continues to serve the local community as well as providing care to children throughout the tri-state area and often beyond. We provide emergency services, continuity care and inpatient management for children and adolescents. Children are cared for in a family-centered atmosphere. Our staff includes about 116 full-time faculty. There are representatives of all pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties. The mission of St. Christopher's is to provide high quality health care, and to maintain excellent teaching and research programs. Our values include reverence for life, health and independence, integrity, sensitivity, fairness and justice, respect, diversity, dignity and pursuit of excellence. We are delighted to have you spend time with us. We believe that you will rapidly find out what is special about a hospital for children. Further, we are happy to participate in your education and look forward to your contributions in caring for our patients and enriching our continuing medical education. Please ask questions, find answers and enjoy yourself. If I can provide additional information or help you in any way during your rotation or later, feel free to contact me in the Office for Medical and Academic Affairs on the first floor of the Hospital, Suite 1111.
Robert McGregor, M.D.
Associate Chair for Medical Education
Department of Pediatrics
St. Christopher's Hospital for Children is a tertiary, as well as primary care hospital. Our beds include 90 general medical/surgical beds on wards which are arranged primarily by age and 68 critical care beds in 6 units: oncology, cardiac care, intensive care, burn, special care, and neonatal intensive care. The surgical department is well staffed and very active. Day surgery and outpatient endoscopy services are heavily utilized; a short procedure unit is active Monday through Friday. The hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories directed by Ph.D. level personnel. Occupational and Physical Therapy, Hearing, Speech and Language Services, Social Services, Discharge Planning, Child Life and Pastoral Care are all available and widely used. Dental services are provided for inpatients and outpatients by our Dental Department. Child psychiatry staff are on site and participate actively in patient care and teaching. In addition to an active Emergency Room, we evaluate patients in a Walk-In Clinic and in a wide variety of both Primary Care and Subspecialty clinics.
The Pediatric Residency training program has about 20 residents per year. Several pediatric subspecialties sponsor fellowships programs. Surgical residents obtain their pediatric experience at St. Christopher's. Residents and fellows from a variety of programs gain experience in our Pathology, Laboratory Medicine, Anesthesiology, and Radiology Departments.
Third-year students may take the required clerkship in Pediatrics. Fourth-year students may take a subinternship in Pediatrics and a variety of electives in Pediatric and Pediatric Surgical Subspecialties.
