Street-side Health Project

Student Giving Patient a Prescription

Street-side Health Project is a mobile health clinic that provides free basic primary health care and has been administered by Prevention Point Philadelphia since its inception in 1998. Street-side medical services are administered through Prevention Point Philadelphia and occur in conjunction with syringe exchange services, rapid HIV testing and counseling, referral services and harm reduction education at various sites throughout North Philadelphia.

The medical services provided by Street-side are coordinated by Prevention Point, and are entirely dependent on volunteer physicians and medical students. Drexel University College of Medicine staffs this clinic on Fridays.  The goal of the Street-side Clinic is to augment the harm reduction services of Prevention Point by increasing access to preventative and basic medical care and to build a relationship with the intravenous drug-using, homeless and other under-served populations in North Philadelphia.

The Street-side Clinic provides basic primary and urgent care, including, but not limited to, hepatitis and influenza vaccinations, wound care, abscess drainage, suturing, blood glucose measurements, and general medical counsel. Volunteers at the Friday afternoon site treat between 4 and 9 patients per clinic, which makes it the busiest of the Street-side locations.

We are actively seeking physician volunteers in order to continue to provide these important services at Prevention Point.  Street-side provides a great opportunity for students and physicians alike to work with a population that otherwise would likely have no contact with the health care system.
